All eyes are on Devan Kipyego as the phenomenal runner begins his senior year in the wake of several running records—both local and national—and accolades that are almost too numerous to count.

The Warwick resident received All New England honors in cross country and indoor track (1000-meter champion), All Northeast Region in cross country, and All American honors in steeplechase (National Champion, Rhode Island and New England record) and the mile during the spring 2022 outdoor track season. He was a qualifier in the 3000-meters at the USATF U20 Outdoor Track Qualifiers this year. As a national qualifier in six indoor and outdoor events in just the 2021-2022 season alone, he set a Rhode Island and New England record time of 4:00.64 in the mile at the 2022 Brooks PR Invitational outdoor track event.

Additionally, Devan was named Rhode Island Cross Country Gatorade Player of the Year in 2021 and Rhode Island Boys Track & Field Gatorade Player of the Year in 2022. He was also named Providence Journal Player of the Year in Boys Indoor Track and Boys Cross Country in June.

“Devan has put in a good summer of training and is ready for a historic cross country season,” said Chris Magill ’90, head coach.

Devan has designs on beating his coach’s second-place record from 1989 and becoming the first SRA athlete to win the New England Cross Country Championships, in addition to working toward another Rhode Island state championship.

Devan is only in his second year of running cross country. He began his athletic career as a member of the Saints soccer team as a freshman and was sidelined with an injury his sophomore year, then found his true calling this year in distance running. Devan’s Gatorade awards are added to a total of five Gatorade awards for SRA students in the last two years.

The boys cross country team begins their season on Saturday, September 3, with the Injury Fund meet at Deerfield Park in Smithfield. For info on the rest of the season, visit the Athletics page.
