The fine arts program at Saint Raphael Academy has a long-standing tradition of including creative expression in the curriculum and in extracurricular activities. Our award-winning Drama Club stages a musical in the fall and a one-act state competition piece in the spring. Our Visual Arts program offers opportunities for students to explore their individual creativity through artistic ventures. Finally, our music program offers a wide array of vocal and instrumental performing opportunities through our various music ensembles.
The Saint Raphael Academy Drama Club traditionally rehearses and performs a musical during the fall semester. This is the perfect opportunity for students who enjoy singing, dancing and acting. Over the past five years, the Drama Club has performed Broadway hits such as Little Women, Little Shop of Horrors, Pippin and Sister Act.
One-Act State Competition Play
The Saint Raphael Academy Drama Club traditionally rehearses and performs a one-act play during the spring semester, which is then entered into the RI State Drama Festival. The drama club has triumphed in 23 Festivals, the most recent in 2017, representing Rhode Island in the New England Drama Festival.
There are multiple opportunities for students who enjoy working behind-the-scenes. Opportunities include set design, set construction, painting, lighting, sound and running crew. Crew members have the opportunity to work on the fall musical, the spring one-act state competition play and the Fine Arts Gala.
This vocal group is open to all student members of the Saint Raphael Academy community. This group sings at all of the liturgical services throughout the year. This includes Holy Days of Obligation and prayer services, in addition to the Fine Arts Gala and Commencement. We also prepare other styles of music for special events. This group sings music in two-part and three-part harmony.
The Gala Chorus is an auditioned group of students who come together during spring semester to perform at the Spring Gala. Each year has a different theme, often borrowing from musicals and/or pop culture. A crew is formed to create sets, lighting, and sound for a dynamic two-night performance. Not only does the entire group perform numbers together, but students can also form small ensembles or prepare solos for the event, as well.
This instrumental group is open to all student members of the Saint Raphael Academy community who are proficient in reading music and already perform on an instrument. (Private lessons are preferred, but not required). To be a member of this group, students audition on their main instrument, testing their skill level and ability. The instrumentation of this ensemble will be based upon the students selected. In past years, this ensemble has performed jazz, rock, popular and traditional concert band music. Venues for performance will be based upon the instrumentation of this group.
In addition, Rhythms and Guitar classes are offered as classes during the academic year.
