Creative Expression

a long-standing tradition

The fine arts program at Saint Raphael Academy has a long-standing tradition of including creative expression in the curriculum and in extracurricular activities. Our award-winning Drama Club stages a musical in the fall and a one-act state competition piece in the spring. Our Visual Arts program offers opportunities for students to explore their individual creativity through artistic ventures. Finally, our music program offers a wide array of vocal and instrumental performing opportunities through our various music ensembles.

The Saint Raphael Academy Drama Club traditionally rehearses and performs a musical during the fall semester and a one-act play during the spring semester, which is then entered into the RI State Drama Festival. All Saints students are invited to audition. Recent productions include Pippin, A Christmas Carol, Tuck Everlasting, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Little Women, and Mary Poppins.

The drama club has triumphed in 24 festivals, the most recent in 2018, representing Rhode Island in the New England Drama Festival.

There are multiple opportunities for students who enjoy working behind-the-scenes, including set design, set construction, painting, lighting, sound and running crew. Crew members may work on the fall musical, the spring one-act state competition play and the Fine Arts Gala.

Liturgical Choir

This vocal group is open to all student members of the Saint Raphael Academy community. This group sings at liturgical services throughout the year, in addition to the Fine Arts Gala and commencement. We also prepare other styles of music for special events. This group sings music in two-part and three-part harmonies.

Gala Chorus

The Gala Chorus is an auditioned group of students who perform at the spring Gala. Each year has a different theme, often borrowing from musicals and/or pop culture. Students may also form small ensembles or prepare solos for the event, as well.

Instrumental Ensemble

This instrumental group is open to all SRA students who are proficient in reading music and already perform on an instrument. (Private lessons are preferred, but not required.) To become a member of this group, students audition on their main instrument, testing their skill level and ability. The instrumentation of this ensemble will be based upon the students selected. In past years, this ensemble has performed jazz, rock, popular and traditional concert band music. Venues for performances will be based upon the instrumentation of this group.

The Dance Company is open to all students and hosts auditions twice a year (fall and spring). They perform recitals in January and May. Dance Company performs many different styles from ballet to lyrical, jazz to tap, and modern to hip hop. All levels of dancers from beginner to seasoned performers are welcome.
