The award-winning Saints Drama program is performing a revival of Godspell December 5-8 at the Coutu Theater. Thursday’s, Friday’s and Saturday’s shows will begin at 7 pm; Sunday’s show is a matinee that begins at 2 pm.
The now-classic story will be performed for the fifth time by the Saints drama troupe. In it, a group of ordinary people and Jesus Christ tell parables from the Gospel according to St. Matthew through song, storytelling and some comedy thrown in. Ethan Cioe has the lead role as Jesus Christ, with Benji Pires as John the Baptist/Judas and Lily Malloy, Mackenzie O’Brien Pettus, and Emily Panas as part of the disciples cast (see the full cast list below).
Godspell has been a favorite for the drama club over the years. The play was performed in 1983, 1994, 2006 and 2014. This year’s revival is being performed in honor of SRA’s 100th anniversary celebration, and alumni of the four previous performances are invited to the production and an exclusive reception.
Godspell will also be adjudicated as an entry in the third annual Ocean State Star Awards program, which recognizes and encourages excellence in high school musical theater. Plays from 13 high schools are being judged during their regular winter performance schedule, and then a revue is performed by each school at Providence Performing Arts Center in the spring. Saints won several awards last year for their rendition of Mary Poppins Jr.
Tickets are $10 for students, senior citizens, and faculty/staff and $15 for adults and may be purchased online or reserved and picked up at the box office. Tickets will also be sold at the door; cash or checks are accepted/no cash apps.
