Saint Raphael Academy Class of 2017

Saint Raphael Academy Class of 2017

A warm and sunny late-spring day greeted family and friends of the graduating Class of 2017 at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul on Sunday, June 11.

Downstairs in the church hall, there was excitement in the air as 123 seniors took selfies, donned honors cords, struggled with caps and gowns, and posed for photos with their favorite teachers. The entire class joined for one last group photo before running to their assigned places in two lines to climb the stairs to the cathedral to begin.

Academy chaplain Rev. Carl Fisette gave the opening prayer, and then Vice Principal of Academics Judy Baxter welcomed all to the commencement. She called the graduates “an outstanding class, academically, athletically, socially and spiritually.”

Poetry and lyrics were a common thread of inspiration for many of the graduation speeches. Mrs. Baxter quoted from “Children Learn What They Live” by Dorothy Law Nolte, explaining how Saints embraces the same beliefs written in the poem, as she urged the graduates to continue this legacy.

Emily Craig was introduced as the class salutatorian. Quoting from Saint Therese of Lisieux, who believed “You cannot be half a saint; you must be a whole saint or no saint at all,” Emily said she and her classmates learned to be whole saints because of the people around them, and should they ever falter, they need only remember their time at SRA for guidance. She also read the poem “It Couldn’t be Done” by Edgar Guest, a rhyme that inspires the reader to ignore cynics and succeed in spite of them.  Emily, a Foster resident, will attend Roger Williams University in the fall.

Dan Richard, principal, presented the diplomas to the graduates, along with The Most Reverend Robert C. Evans, D.D., J.C.L., Auxiliary Bishop of Providence, and Dan Ferris, superintendent of Catholic schools of the Diocese of Providence. Families joyfully cheered for their graduates. After the final graduate had received her diploma, a stirring rendition of “I’ll Be There” by The Jackson 5 was performed by senior members of the SRA Liturgical Choir and Gala Chorus.

The traditional turning of the tassels signified the class officially becoming alumni, and Alumni Director (and member of the Class of 1985) Mary Jane Ferland welcomed them to the alumni community.

Mrs. Baxter introduced valedictorian Anthony Bateman next. “Saints gave us the skills that we need in order to be successful. We learned how to be there for others when they needed us, we learned how to stand up for what we believe in, and we learned how to be true to ourselves.”  He ended his speech with lyrics from Jordin Sparks’ song “One Step at a Time,” urging fellow graduates to take each moment — both good and more challenging ones – as they come and they will ultimately lead to success. Anthony, who is from Providence, plans to attend Boston College this fall.

Award medallions for distinguished awards and subject merit awards were presented to seniors by Mr. Richard, Bishop Evans and Mr. Ferris (see list below).

Mr. Richard also addressed the class, noting that this year Saints had a state championship-winning drama team, an RIIL athlete of the year, and a class that was offered over $16 million in scholarship awards. He sincerely thanked families for entrusting their children to Saint Raphael Academy to guide them in their spiritual and academic development.

Bishop Evans gave the final blessing, and the Class of 2017 filed out of the cathedral and into the sunshine to take the first steps into their promising futures.
