Saint Raphael Academy students have had great successes in the sports world in January. Join us in congratulating all of our scholar-athletes! Here are the highlights:

 

All-State Teams

The Providence Journal released its All-State Team lists for fall high school sports. Saint Raphael Academy student-athletes figured prominently in tennis, football, and boys soccer.

Lauren Taylor was named to the All-State, Second Team in girls tennis. The honor recognizes the top 20 high school players in the state. Lauren, a senior, completed the season with a 15-0 record at first singles, and was one DSC_3967_Taylorof two players from Division III to receive this honor. She is also the first girls tennis player from Saint Raphael Academy selected for the All-State team. She was also chosen for the First Team, All-Division, Singles, Division-III.

Other players recognized were the doubles team of senior Kate Zhou and junior Kim Rodas, who were selected to First Team, Doubles, Division-III Central A; and seniors Alyssa Fletcher and Grace Senra, both named to Second Team, Singles Division-III Central A.

 

The Providence Journal also announced its All-State football team. Kaleel Harley (DB/RB/R) was listed in the top 10, recognized for 10 touchdowns and 6 interceptions, among other accomplishments, during the season that included a trip to the Division II Super Bowl. The senior was also named to the All-Division, Division II-A, First Team, Offense (WR).

Junior Trevante Jones (DB) was named to the Second Team list and the All-Division list, Division II-A, First Team, Defense;  other players selected to the Division II-A, First Team, Defense include junior Jayden Encarnacion (LB) and senior Seth Burdett (DL).

Players chosen for the Second Team were juniors Kaya Khaytin-Andrade, Xavier Torres and Austin Williams and seniors Tunde Akinjobi, Samuel Nwofor and Kevin Gonzalez.

 

Several Saints players were also chosen for the All-State boys soccer team. In Division-III, First Team Selections included junior Derek DeLaHoz and senior Rene Ogni, while seniors Pablo Estrada and Justin Jackson and sophomore Brady Thibault were Second Team Selections; senior Helpsis Genao was a Third Team Selection. Freshmen Cano Morales received Honorable Mention.

Special awards went to Justin Jackson, who won the Mike Dynon Academic All-State and the RISCA All-Academic Team.

 

Junior Haley Howarth was selected to the Providence Journal All-State Girls Cross Country team, Class C, Second Team.

The All-State student-athletes will be recognized by the Journal with a sports awards banquet in June. In addition, the newspaper company will award a $5,000 scholarship to one of the athletes.

 

Runners and Jumpers Score Well at Indoor Track Invitational

Members of the boys and girls indoor track teams participated in the first annual Rhode Island Track & Field Foundation World Trophies Invitational in January.

Junior Pat Bullen was the standout from Saint Rays, winning first place in the high jump (5-8) and long jump (20-1.75) events. Pat also placed third in the 55-meter hurdles (8.45).

Senior Helpisis Genao placed first in the 55-meter with a time of 6.98, and also took fifth place in the high jump event (5-4).

In the girls track events, the relay team of sophomores Ashley Bullen and Kaylee Contreras and juniors Cameille Keith and Haley Howarth took first place in the 4×200 event with a time of 1:55.52.

Ashley (sibling of Pat) also placed second in the long jump event with a jump of 15-3, while Kaylee placed fourth with a jump of 14-10.25. In the 400-meter race, Haley placed third with a time of 1:06.32.

As a result of their World Trophies wins, Pat, Ashley, Kaylee, Cameille and Haley were invited to compete in the 5th Annual East Coast Track & Field Invitational at Providence Career and Technical Academy in Providence.

 

Athlete of the Week

Two SRA students were selected back-to-back as the Pawtucket Times’ Athlete of the WeeDSC_072_Jonesk.

Junior Trevante Jones was recognized the week of January 13 for his contribution in the Saints’ 64-39 win over Woonsocket, when he scored 24 points. The boys D-1 basketball team stands at 10-2 record overall going into the next week of the season.

Junior Kasey Gagan was selected January 20 for scoring 15 points in the triple-overtime girls basketball game against Cumberland last week, and 19 points in the game against Johnston – both resulted in wins that brought the D-II team record to 9-2 overall.

 

Congratulations, Coach LaBree!

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has named Saint Raphael Academy coach Ron LaBree 2015 Rhode Island Softball Coach of the Year. Coach LaBree began coaching the softball team five years ago and last spring coached the team to a Division-II state title. LaBree was nominated by Saints athletic director Ray Tanguay.
