Throwback Thursday

Our photoblogs offer a unique glimpse into the Catholic, Lasallian, college preparatory school that is Saint Raphael Academy — whether it is our Walkabout Wednesday photoblog, which portrays scenes from our day-to-day life on Walcott Street, or our Throwback Thursday photoblog, which illustrates the robust 89-year history of the Academy.

Please check back frequently as we will be updating these photoblogs weekly, and if you have a photo that you think should be included, please send them to dmajewski@saintrays.org.

The Throwback Thursday photoblog features photos from Saint Raphael Academy’s 89-year archive of yearbooks, press clippings, and photographs. Posted each Thursday, these great photos help demonstrate the wonderful history and tradition of the Academy.

We were doing a bit of spring cleaning here on campus earlier this week. We came across this picture captioned, “Interscholastic League Boxing, St. Raphael vs. Pawtucket, St. Raphael Gymnasium, April 27, 1937.” It became the motivation for a new weekly feature we are calling “Throwback Thursday.” Check back every Thursday for more images illustrating Saint Raphael Academy’s illustrious past.

Because our baseball and softball seasons are officially underway, today’s Throwback Thursday photo is of the 1937 Saint Raphael Academy baseball team. This team had championship aspirations and a dramatic playoff run. Today the SRA varsity baseball team takes on Cranston East at 3:30 at Veterans Memorial Park in Pawtucket, and tomorrow the SRA varsity softball team plays Central High School at 4 p.m. at Hank Soar Athletic Complex.

Think they are checking Facebook? Probably not, considering Mark Zuckerberg was only two years old when these Saint Raphael Academy students were busy learning computer science on Walcott Street in 1986.

For today’s Throwback Thursday photo we wanted to honor the most recent SAINT being inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, TJ Sorrentine… Pictured here is the self-proclaimed, “Imperial Three”: Carlos Moreira, TJ Sorrentine, and Harry Grigsby, in March 2000, shortly after capturing SRA’s second of what would become four straight state titles in basketball. http://www.golocalprov.com/sports/tj-sorrentine-to-be-inducted-into-the-ne-basketball-hof/

Tonight our seniors will gather at Quidnessett Country Club for their prom. Since it also happens to be Throwback Thursday, we thought it would be fun to show you a few pictures from past senior proms of our faculty and staff members who are also Saint Raphael Academy alumni. We couldn’t track down pictures of them all, even though we tried, but here are a couple… Pictured here is Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Malaina Murphy ’85. Enjoy your prom, Class of 2013!

In honor of Memorial Day this past Monday, we wanted to dedicate this Throwback Thursday to the Saint Raphael Academy alumni who have died in defense of our freedoms. In February of 1947, the program for the Saint Raphael Academy Revue included this, “humble tribute.” These are the faces of the men who made the supreme sacrifice in World War II. Their names are also forever etched on the base of the iconic Saint Raphael statue in front of the West Building. Next time we pass this statue, may we remember these men, and the other SAINTS who have made the supreme sacrifice, and, “in a measure, express our appreciation and our gratitude to them and to their dear ones.”

Just as it was 74 years ago, when the Class of 1939 received their diplomas and set off for lives of learning, leadership, and service. The Class of 2013 spent this week taking their final exams and excitedly awaiting their own commencement exercises at the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul on Sunday. Congratulations, Class of 2013, and may Jesus and Saint Raphael Academy live in your hearts… Forever!
