Over the summer, workers prepare the court of Alumni Hall to become the Dennis M. Lynch, Jr. Memorial Court.

With the transformation of the Lynch Gymnasium into the Coutu Theater almost complete, Saint Raphael Academy wanted a way to continue to honor and remember Dennis M. Lynch, Jr., the Saint Raphael Academy graduate and coach for whom the Lynch Gymnasium was named. As such, tonight (Friday, December 27) at 6:45 p.m., prior to the Saint Raphael Academy boys’ basketball game vs. the Wheeler School, the court at Alumni Hall will be dedicated to the memory of Dennis M. Lynch, Jr.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Dennis M. Lynch, Jr. ’74 was the eldest child of Pawtucket Mayor Dennis Lynch ’50 and his wife Irene. Dennis was the quintessential Saint Raphael Academy student. He was a standout athlete—captain of the basketball team and 4-year member of the golf team. He was a scholar, named to the Who’s Who and Outstanding American High School Student Societies. He was active in several extra-curricular activities such as the Drama Club and the Variety Show. He was an active student leader, serving as President of the Senior Class, as well as an editor of the yearbook. Finally—and fittingly—he was named Valedictorian for the Class of 1974.

After graduating college four years later, Dennis returned to SRA to serve as the head basketball coach. His promising future was cut very short in 1988 with a diagnosis of malignant melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer. His death several months later at the age of 33 left a hole in many lives. Family members and friends established the Dennis M. Lynch, Jr. ’74 Memorial Scholarship in his honor, and continue to contribute to it annually. Thanks to their loyalty and generosity, hundreds of students have received financial assistance through the Lynch Scholarship Fund. This multi-generational family of Saint Raphael Academy alumni will be remembered long into the future because of the life and example of Dennis M. Lynch, Jr.
