Bishop Tobin announces a text-to-give program for Keep the Heat On.

Bishop Thomas Tobin visited Saint Raphael Academy today to announce a new initiative for giving to the annual Keep the Heat on Campaign, a 10-year-old program that has provided heating assistance to Rhode Island residents who have trouble paying heating bills.

While Bishop Tobin noted the recent mild weather, he asked students from Mark O’Dea’s Theology class who were in attendance, “Remember what last year was like,” referencing the unusually large snowfall last winter and record low temperatures.  “Keep the Heat On will continue to be very important for our state,” he said. Last year, the diocese provided assistance to 1,600 households. The bishop also announced a $50,000 grant from the annual Catholic Charity Appeal to begin funding this year’s campaign.

To kick off the new text-to-give program, junior Emma Mendes made the first texting donation from her phone. As phone use is not allowed at SRA during the school day, both Principal Dan Richard and the bishop gave her special dispensation!

Individuals who wish to donate to Keep the Heat On by text can text “HEAT” to 27722 to make a $10 donation, or text “HEATRI” to the same number to donate $25. The donation will appear on your mobile phone bill, and is tax deductible.
