Coral Santos '14 and Alyssa Fletcher '16 lead a discussion with students from The De La Salle School in Freeport, NY.

Typically, April break is an opportunity for rest and relaxation, but for a group of Saint Raphael Academy students and faculty it was an opportunity to help others through service.

Six Saint Raphael Academy students and two staff members spent the week at The De La Salle School in Freeport, New York. The De La Salle School is a San Miguel School with 66 boys, ranging from grades 5 through 8.

Early in the trip, our students helped out in individual classrooms to get the feel of the school. As the week progressed, they ran a number of workshops focusing on the life of Saint John Baptist de La Salle and examples of Jesus modeling service in the New Testament. They also spoke to the 8th grade class, giving the younger students a personal perspective about moving on to high school, and they spoke to the 7th graders about stepping up to be leaders.

This is the third April break that students from Saint Raphael Academy have dedicated their time in service at The De La Salle School.

During the week, the students were able to travel into New York City and visit with the Lasallian Youth Group at Bishop Loughlin High School, a Lasallian high school in Brooklyn. They also spent time in community with Bro. Tom Casey, the Brothers, and the Lasallian Volunteers who live in Freeport. Bro. Tom is a former principal of Saint Raphael Academy, and he currently serves as Executive Director at The De La Salle School.

We are proud of these students for their service and for being such great ambassadors for Saint Raphael Academy.
